LightBox Studios Negotiates the Lighting Aesthetics for the BIG Relocation Project

LightBox Studios Director Michael Mehl served as a guest judge on the Illuminating Engineering Society (IESNYC) scholarship committee as it awarded its fourth annual merit-based scholarship to Brigid Hardiman, a candidate in the MPS Lighting Design program at New York School of Interior Design. The scholarship awards $25,000 to a full-time, graduate degree candidate in architectural lighting who is enrolled in an accredited college or university located in New York State, fostering the next generation of cutting-edge lighting designers.

New York Stem Cell Foundation Opens Its New Research Facility

The New York Stem Cell Foundation’s new state-of-the-art facility on West 54th Street features a glass-enclosed research laboratory framed by open offices, corridors and common space. LightBox Studios created a light design, guided by simplicity and a sensitivity to space type, that highlighted the importance of the lab yet visually integrated the spaces surrounding it.

Melissa Goren Serves on Jury for Architectural Record

Melissa Goren, Studio Manager at LightBox Studios, was part of a jury of architects, lighting designers and interiors experts assembled by Architectural Record to select the winners for its Record Products 2016 competition. The six-member panel considered more than 425 entries in nine different categories—facades; finishes & surfacing; furnishings; hardware, software & control systems; HVAC; kitchen & bath; lighting & electrical; openings; outdoor & recreational—rating them on usefulness, aesthetics, and degree of innovation.

New Facility Emphasizes Home

The new Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center campus in Yonkers, NY, specializes in long-term pediatric care while also providing outreach programs to the community. The LEED Silver, 165,000 square foot, 138-bed facility has as its primary goal a homelike and stimulating experience for its young residents. The center of each of the three residential floors is primarily offices and therapy rooms, with two V-shaped wings—each wing considered a “neighborhood”—extending from the clustered core. The design emphasis was on bedrooms, family rooms, playrooms and destination spaces, and LightBox Studios played into that emphasis with a lighting design that met the demands of the professional and therapeutic spaces while establishing a warmer, homier ambiance for the residential areas.

Pediatric Center Gets a Good Prognosis

Check out this ENR New York article about the remarkably quick realization of Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center relocation from downtown Manhattan to Yonkers. Perkins Eastman came up with a design that uniquely integrated the therapeutic and residential aspects of the facility and achieved LEED Silver certification as well.

ColumbiaDoctors Midtown Wins Best of Category 2013

ColumbiaDoctors Midtown was awarded Best of Category for Ambulatory Care Centers in the 2013 Healthcare Interior Design Competition sponsored by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). A jury of design professionals chose the winners based on suitability of design to the project challenge, originality of the design solution, and successful integration of interior finishes and furnishings. LightBox Studios provided a lighting design that honored the interplay of reception, clinical and consultation spaces while creating an overall ambience of calm professionalism.

Studios Architecture Composes a Perfect Harmony at Sony's US Headquarters

LightBox Studios was the lighting designer for the cool, minimalist lobby of the Sony Building, creating a lighting scenario that softened the prevailing white marble surfaces while playing off the space’s geometric intensity. Working in tandem with Studios Architecture and JB&B, LightBox successfully negotiated the delicate balance involved in bringing a neo-Romanesque space into the 21st century.
